CURATOR: WILLIAM GORE (HE/HIM)
In Appalachia and the Greater South, genders are formed in dead-end towns and stifling environments. However restrictive these places are, there's freedom and belonging found in these spaces. From discovering gender with like-minded people to seeing gender in religion and nature, no legislation will ever prevent the Southern understanding of gender from thriving.
While formulating this exhibition, I’ve strived to get experiences of gender in the South outside of my own as gender is influenced and formed by our environment and uncontrolled aspects of our birth– politics, class, ethnicity, race, and sex, among many others. The Southern United States has a rich history of revolutionary thought, motivated by continuous economic and social struggle. For this reason, The South is a place where transgressive gender and gender expression thrives.
CATALOG WILL BE RELEASED ON THE FINAL WEEK OF EXHIBITION. PLEASE ENJOY AND BROWSE THE WORKS!
Art is organized by the medium used. Please click the buttons on the right to navigate the exhibit.
